I agree with the variable of how you use the bike and care for the chain, but I have found that in general the stock 525 chain will last about 20k miles if cared for. 520 replacement chains will usually last about 10k miles. Adjust those guideline numbers according to your own use and maintenance.
Recently bought a BMW 3 series 318d from car dealer. Car lost power as I was driving (luckily enough I had enough movement to roll over to side). Car is 58 plate done 110,000 miles Car was picked up and took to local garage advised the timing chain had snapped and a new engine re-build will be required in the region of £2,500+.

Normally the timing chain kit can last to 80,000-100,000 miles without any problems. However, due to the design flaws cause the potential timing chain tensioner problem, we’ll highly recommend the car owners to replace the N47 engine timing chain set periodically.

In most cases, a timing belt kit will consist of the belt itself, 2-3 idler pulleys, and a tensioner. When the job is done, all these components will be changed out. In most cases, a timing belt kit will run between $100 -350. Labor on most timing belts is between 3-5 hours, putting your total cost between $400 -1,000.
